It all started when…

At the beginning of fall 2018, the College of Business’ accounting and Professional Accounting Certificate advisor Kristina Brown began teaching an online hybrid course called “Professional Development in Accounting” (ACCT 456). This course is designed to build the professional skills that will ease the transition from University life into the business world. The skills that are exercised in this course are critical to creating a successful and meaningful career in the accounting profession.

The course focuses on tools such as discovering an increased awareness of individual strengths, learning proper interview techniques, and creating an effective resume. Students also research various accounting firms and learn about the different types of accounting careers. In addition, students learn about the steps that need to be taken to sit for the CPA exam, how to go about studying for the exam, and strategies for passing the exam on the first time around.

ACCT 456 is yet another way that CSU, Chico’s accounting program bolsters student success and helps prepare students for a lucrative career in accounting.

The course has already received excellent feedback from students:

“This course has taught me so much about the industry and the CPA exam, and in such little time I can finally say I feel comfortable and ready to sit for the CPA exam and begin my career as a public accountant,” said student Edward Leskauskas, class of 2018.

“I believe this course will help me a great deal on my road to earning my CPA,” said student Donald McNair, class of 2018.

“With only one semester left, this course helped solidify that I am at that point of needing to make important decisions regarding my career. The readings and activities helped to give insight on what I need to do in the upcoming months,” said student Shannon Johnson, a senior.
