BAP VITA Program
Oscar’s take on the VITA program…
Oscar Diaz is a Senior at CSU Chico and is the Director of the VITA program on campus. Diana Tol Garcia is a junior at CSU Chico and is assistant director of the VITA program. Both are pictured during a short break just outside their VITA station. With all his hard work, members of the community are able to receive free tax filing services. Below is Oscar’s commentary on the VITA program and all the help they give:
"The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program is instrumental in being able to provide the community with an excellent tax preparation service experience. During the 2018 VITA Program, volunteer students helped file over 952 federal and state returns in the span of 8 weeks that totaled refund amounts of around $900,000. In addition to the refunds, the Chico State VITA Program helped save the community up to $250,000 in tax preparation fees. In total the VITA program had an economic impact of over $1,000,000 in Butte County.
All of the resounding success is not made possible without the help and support from the Butte Community Action Agency who was able to fill in the gap in order to provide the entire Butte County community with a full fledged VITA program for 2019. Chico State students are at the core of VITA’s success. Last year alone, the students dedicated a total of over 2,500 hours to aid the community. For VITA 2019, nearly 100 Chico State students enrolled to help their community. Chico State students make up the majority of the Chico area’s VITA program. Many students who enrolled in previous years look forward to enrolling in current or future years in order to continue providing this essential service to our community.
VITA has offered accounting and finance students a way to gain relevant experience not only with tax technical details, but core soft skills such as time management, client relations, and team building. All of which are skills we believe to be crucial to what makes for a successful business professional."
