Accounting Leadership Award in Career Advancement: Fernando Cordova
Fernando Cordova, the VP Tech for BAP at Chico State has been selected for the Accounting Leadership Award in Career Advancement. Fernando was selected for this award due to his success with coordinating recruiting efforts with accounting firms and accounting students. From the fall recruiting event “Meet the Firms” to weekly technical meetings where students get to hear first hand from recruiters, Fernando has done the behind the scenes work to coordinate all these efforts. Student led organization such as BAP and students like Fernando truly are essential for the student success.
A terrific Financial Accounting teacher at Shasta College sparked Fernando’s interest in the field of accounting. Accounting is hard work and to enjoy the challenge is a sign of a successful accountant. “I loved the work more than the other business classes, so I stuck with it and I'm glad I did”.
Having experience in public accounting before you graduate really helps becoming acquainted with the software and the training for a full-time job once you graduate. Fernando had an internship at K-Coe Isom in tax over the 2018 summer. “This experience helped with understanding accounting outside of a classroom environment”, says Fernando. “Working with multiple types of clients and traveling to other offices had really helped Fernando decide what he wants to do in the future.” After graduation, Fernando plans on passing the CPA exam and starting on his public accounting career.
“The Chico State Accounting program is successful because of the motivated professors that help students succeed in accounting. Tim Kizirian, the department chair and the other accounting faculty have been incredibly helpful with everything from career placement to industry knowledge”, Fernando explains. “Even after finishing their courses, Professors will keep their doors open to help past students with anything they can.”
Fernando will be handing the job of VP Tech over to a future student but will always be remembered as highly successful at his job. The Accounting Leadership Award in Career Advancement really fits Fernando due to all the hard work and preparation that went into hosting successful recruiting events.
